Adaptive Halloween Costumes

Screen-Shot-2021-10-13-at-12.39.46-PM

Halloween is a spooky time of year, filled with scary movies, candy, decorations, and dressing up! Unfortunately, all costumes are not made for all children. Homemade or purchased, we are here to help you find the latest adaptive trends to meet your needs.

Target has a great selection of adaptive Halloween costumes, with sensory friendly options coming all sizes from toddler to adult. They also include features such as removable hoods and tails and soft texture to improve comfort levels. Additionally, most include a long side zipper for easy dressing.

Many companies now create costume wheelchair covers to complete your look. If you are more of an online shopper, stores such as shopDisney and Party City are now including adaptive options. These costumes allow all kiddos to be who they want to be for Halloween.

DIY Costumes

Can’t find what you are looking for in the store? Get crafty and make your own costume! Websites like Pinterest and The Coolest have tons of great ideas for changing costumes. These sites have ideas to help you incorporate equipment such as standers, strollers, and gait trainers into your look. DIY costumes also allow for increased control over the type of fabric and props, as well as the overall feel of the costume. This helps provide increased comfort as well as flexibility for those with sensory sensitivities. Additionally, you can modify costumes to include flaps and access points for equipment such as feeding tubes and oxygen lines.

Regardless if your costume is homemade or purchased, we hope your child enjoys this spooky season with their friends and families. If you’re looking for adaptive activities this Halloween season, make sure to check out more information on Trick-or-Treat Alternatives. We cannot wait to see the photos of all the creative costumes this year! Make sure to post on our social media pages and tag our clinic to share your ideas!
