What to Expect At Your First Visit

Getting Started

A pediatric evaluation can be a stressful experience for both children and their parents. It’s natural to have questions and concerns about what to expect during your first visit with us, so here is a summary of what you can expect on your evaluation.

Documents to Have Ready

Insurance Cards: Make sure to bring all your insurance cards, especially if you have more than one insurance coverage.

Forms: Please bring relevant documents such as medical history, IEP, IFSP, swallow studies, neuropsychology reports, etc, along with the paperwork outlined in the “Welcome Letter” email you should’ve received prior to the first appointment.

School Therapist Contact Information: We will need the contact information for the school therapist(s) and the school name.

Equipment: Please bring any devices or equipment your child uses, such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), splints, braces, walkers, etc.

Food: Remember to bring food if your child is scheduled for a feeding evaluation.

Upon Arrival

Please complete the required paperwork and a thorough medical history as outlined in the “Welcome Letter” email that was sent to you prior to arriving for the first appointment.

If these items are not completed prior to arrival, plan to arrive 20 mins early so that they can be completed prior to the start of the appointment. This helps us provide the most thorough and complete evaluation of your child.

  • Meet our front desk staff and check in for your appointment by use of our self-service kiosk (if the kiosk is not available, check in at the front desk).
  • Please bring your insurance card(s) so that copies can be made and uploaded to your child’s chart.
  • Pay co-pays and required out of pocket amounts.

Afterwards, our evaluating therapist(s) will be notified of your arrival and will come to greet you to begin the appointment!

Keep in mind co-payments are due at time of service

Evaluation

Your first appointment with us will be an evaluation. This evaluation will include a test, observation of how your child plays, and a review of their medical history. During the evaluation, our therapist might ask you a few questions regarding your current concerns and your child’s medical history.

The therapist will complete a one-on-one assessment with the child based on the parents’ concerns. You might be asked to fill out additional questionnaires during the session if more information is needed.

We ask that one parent be in the room with your child and the therapist during this first appointment. The appointment time may vary, as some children may take a little time to warm up to their new friend!

Post Evaluation

Our evaluating therapist will write up an evaluation document, score tests, and determine whether services are recommended.

We will coordinate with your doctor and insurance to secure the information needed in order to schedule subsequent treatment sessions. This might take more than 2 weeks, but rest assured we will contact you to schedule your future visits!

If services are not recommended, the evaluating therapist will contact you and let you know right away.
