Summer activities are a great way to spend time with your kiddos during their time off of school and teach them something new! These sensory-friendly summer activities are perfect for kids of all abilities. We can’t wait to see what fun things you do with your summer break, so don’t forget to share them with us on social media!

Edible Finger Painting

Make edible finger paint to engage your child’s senses! This includes activity engages their touch, sight, and smell.

  1. Gather your supplies: cornstarch, water, gel food coloring, plastic containers with lids, a saucepan and whisk.
  2. In the saucepan, mix 1 cup cornstarch with 2.5 cups cold water. Heat on medium heat until it reaches a simmer and make sure to keep stirring to prevent lumps.
  3. Once the mixture has thickened, divide it between the plastic containers and mix in the gel food coloring. Feel free to play around with colors to get as many different ones as you want! Putting them in containers with lids means you can save them for later!

These paints are not meant to eat but are safe for consumption. Get some paper and let your kiddos use their fingers to explore the colors and textures of these paints.

Picnic in the Park

A picnic in the park is a perfect summer opportunity to explore all of the senses you experience outdoors! Children can play with their sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch. Pack your basket with a blanket, make some snacks (find lots of yummy ideas here!), and head out to a local park!

Some of our favorite parks in the area are: Lake Front Park Playground in Kenosha, Grant Park in South Milwaukee, Kayla’s Playground in Franklin, Lake Vista Park in Oak Creek, and Kid’s Cove Playground in Racine!

Make sure to allow plenty of time to explore. Let your kiddos feel the grass and leaves, smell the flowers and water, listen to the sounds of the bugs and animals all around, look at the nature sights, and taste the delicious meal that you packed!

Homemade Ice Cream

Ice cream is the perfect summer treat! Making your own can be a super fun way to use your senses and learn something new. Check out this helpful graphic from In the Kids Kitchen for step-by-step instructions on making Ice Cream in a Bag. A kid friendly method that is fun and delicious!
