Get your kiddos the speech therapy practice they need over the summer months while still having fun and keeping them occupied during summer vacation! Have fun with these speech therapist approved summer activities!

Playing with chalk

  • Draw words with your child’s sound.
  • Prompt requests by having your child request “chalk”, “color”, “all done”.
  • Draw and talk about the picture together (colors, items, categories, functions etc.).
  • Draw and describe a scene and make up a story using narrative structure (character, plot, problem, solution).

Go on a walk/play outside

  • Expand vocabulary by using verbs during play (go, kick, throw,), describe the weather, work on requesting toys to play with.
  • Find objects that start with your child’s sounds.
  • Find and describe common objects you find outside (I.e. “green leaf”).
  • Turn it into ISpy taking turns, describing items, finding items that start with a specific sound.
  • Follow the leader work on following directions and taking turns.

Playing in the water

  • Target concept: wet vs. Dry, hot vs. Cold, on vs off.
  • Expand vocabulary: wet, dry, jump, run, in, out, splash etc.
  • Follow directions (I.e. “jump in the water”).

Playing in the sand

  • Target concepts to expand language: Dig vs Bury, build vs knock down etc.
  • Prompt you child to request actions or a variety of toys to play in the sand.
  • Expand vocabulary/work on articulation sounds (common words: dig, sand, soft, pour, build, castle, dump).
  • Follow directions: ex: put sand in. Put sand in then dump out. Etc.
  • Social Skills: take turns building and sharing sand toys.
