The month of March is here and that means St. Patrick’s Day fun is too! Arts and crafts are a great way to engage your child in sensory as well as creative tasks that help them practice important motor skills. Have your kiddo enjoy getting crafty with this colorful handprint pot of gold!
Here is what you will need:
- three standard size papers
- tape
- different color paints (washable, in case of accidents!)
- a paint tray
- a foam paint brush (a normal brush will do too!)
- pencil (to draw the pot of gold)
This is appropriate for any age and can be done independently or with assistance. For older children, the art project can be graded up. This includes letting the child get all the supplies, put the paint into the paint tray, applying paint individually to each hand, then placing the hand on the paper in straight line. For younger children the project can be graded down to whatever is easiest, or most comfortable, for them. This could mean helping apply the paint to their hand and having the child place it on the paper or helping them place it on the paper as well. Complete assistance is ok! Have fun with it!
Step 1:
Layout your supplies and tape your three pieces of paper together to make one long paper.
Step 2:
Squeeze your paint into separate spots in the paint tray. If you want, you can mix them slightly for a marbled look!
Step 3:
For each handprint, paint the desired color onto the palm and fingers of the hand, then stamp it on the paper. Make sure you press firmly! When you pull your hand up off the paper, a colorful handprint will be left.
Step 4:
Draw a pot of gold with your pencil or free hand it with the paint brush. Paint the pot black and add rounds dots of St. Patrick’s Day gold!
You can also write “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” on the paper. This is a great way to practice handwriting and spelling! Don’t be afraid to get creative! ✨
